Indeed the Philippine flag was raised higher and with much more pride to every child’s heart in Stockbridge International School for the entire month of August, as the school celebrated the “Buwan ng Wika” along with the whole nation. With the theme “Pagtibayin ang Samahan ng Pamilyang Pilipino” the celebration was aimed to strengthen Filipino tradition, culture and values. With this in thought, Stockbridge IS Davao and Stockbridge IS General Santos City brainstormed together and designed to fill the month of August with a variety of exciting classroom activities that integrate learning and instilling love and appreciation of our rich Filipino culture, with fun and play.

Stockbridge IS Davao had a week-long of Palarong Pambansa sub-theme that surely awakened the active spirits of the local games our grandfathers used to play in the streets during their childhood days. Tumbang Preso, Sungka, Kadang-kadang, Luksong Tinik, Sipa and Syatong to name a few, brought awe to the tots as their busy bodies moved with full energy playing these national games.

Meanwhile Stockbridge IS GenSan children went musical, learning Filipino songs like Bahay-kubo and Paa Tuhod Balikat Ulo, introducing different cultural dances and musical instruments, while wearing their dazzling Filipino Costumes of Barong Tagalog, Baro’t Saya, Maria Clara, T’boli suits and many more.

Discussion in the older classes of Nursery 2 and Kindergarten about Philippine Heroes and national symbols sparked a light of interest to the children as all these came to life through telling and reading stories of our history, visual presentations and pretend play or dramatization. Activities such as these promote the concept of Filipino bravery, nationalism and patriotism.

But what’s a celebration without scrumptious food? The “Fiesta sa Nayon” was a definite highlight for the Stockbridge Filipino month. A tasty array of Filipino dishes overflowed the tables of the school making every mouth water in the sight of adobo, tinola, sinigang, and Filipino kakanin such as biko, sapin-sapin, palabok and a whole lot of Filipino delicacies brought by very supportive parents and families, which were all shared by everyone, surely making this celebration a grand feast.

As the month ended, the series of events were culminated with ”My Family’s Got Talent” placing the spotlight to each Stockbridge child’s family on their skills and talents which took place on stage last August 29, 2014. It was a Proud-Pinoy moment for everyone while the children and parents paraded their best national costumes. Songs, dances, and special tricks and surprises each family showcased painted smiles, laughter and pride to everyone’s faces. Activities like these help promote one of the most valuable and important trademark as a Filipino and that is the closeness and love of the family.

The whole month was a great success and the children had the most remarkable and meaningful experience that captured their young minds and left a mark in their Filipino hearts as well. The tots experienced first-hand the wonderful and intricate world of our culture. With the unity of the Stockbridge IS team and the full participation and support of the parents and children, the “Buwan ng Wika” was definitely worth remembering and treasured for a lifetime.
